Our client, a global beverage multinational, was exploring the adoption of product authentication technology to enhance brand protection and supply chain transparency. With a rapidly evolving technology landscape, the client needed a clear understanding of the current solutions available and the key players in the space. Discuvr was engaged to conduct a targeted technology scouting exercise and identify potential technology partners.

    The Brief

Discuvr was asked to carry out a full market and technology scan, including:

    • A comprehensive review of available authentication technologies

    • Identification of emerging and established solution providers

    • A structured process to shortlist the most relevant partners

    what we did

Discuvr delivered a thorough technology scouting engagement using our proprietary “M-A-G-I-C” methodology — a structured, unbiased approach to identifying and assessing innovative technologies:

Map – We began by visually mapping the client’s requirements and defining selection criteria to guide the scouting process.

Assess – Leveraging in-house AI tools, we assessed a wide range of sources, from startup databases and market intelligence reports to IP filings and academic research, to identify relevant technologies.

Gather – All findings were sorted and structured into a comprehensive repository, allowing us to explore how individual technologies or combinations could address the client’s needs.

Ideate – We synthesized the findings to propose how different solutions could be adapted or integrated to create a compelling, real-world application. This included early-stage design concepts and feasibility checks to bring ideas to life.

Choose – Finally, using the pre-agreed scoring criteria, we evaluated all candidates and delivered a shortlist of the top 3 solutions and providers that best met the client’s strategic goals.

    Technology Review

We confirmed that the company’s initial concept was promising and mission-driven. However, during our review, we discovered that the technology under development had diverged significantly from what was originally proposed, and was no longer aligned with the company’s existing IP protection.

    IP & Competitive Landscape

Our prior art search revealed a critical risk: a well-established U.S. competitor was already selling a near identical product, backed by multiple patents. This created a major barrier to the startup’s freedom to operate.

    Regulatory & Market Risks

We found the business model relied heavily on obtaining permits in certain jurisdictions a process with uncertain timelines and outcomes.

    Financial Analysis

The numbers did not support the business case. Freshwater output was much lower than expected, while financial payback was projected to take significantly longer than originally outlined.
